BRIEF HISTORY OF CAMERA TECHNOLOGY
1940s-1950s: The Film Era
Roll film and 35mm rangefinder cameras (like the Leica)
dominated. Kodachrome, introduced in 1935, was the standard
for color photography through this period. Cameras were
fully mechanical — manual focus, manual exposure, no
electronics at all.
1960s-1970s: The Rise of the SLR
Single-lens reflex (SLR) cameras like the Nikon F and Canon
FX let photographers see exactly what the lens saw through a
mirror-and-prism system. Through-the-lens (TTL) metering
arrived in the late 1960s, making exposure much easier to
judge.
1980s: Autofocus and Automation
Autofocus SLRs (Minolta Maxxum, 1985) and compact
point-and-shoot cameras brought photography to casual users.
Electronics started controlling exposure and focus.
1990s: The Digital Transition
Early consumer digital cameras appeared (Kodak, Sony,
Casio), but resolution was low (under 1 megapixel) and
adoption was slow. Film still dominated professional and
consumer use.
2000s: The DSLR Revolution
Digital SLRs became affordable and practical — the Canon EOS
300D/Digital Rebel (2003) and Nikon D70 (2004) brought DSLRs
to mainstream consumers. CMOS sensors improved rapidly,
resolution jumped, and film sales collapsed within a few
years.
2007-2010s: The Smartphone Disruption
The iPhone (2007) had a basic camera, but by the iPhone 4
(2010) with its front-facing camera and iPhone 4S (2011)
with 8MP sensor, phone cameras became genuinely useful.
Instagram (2010) accelerated phone photography culture.
2010s-Present: Computational Photography
Instead of just bigger sensors, iPhones (and Android
flagships) began using software — HDR, Night Mode, Portrait
Mode, multiple lenses fused via AI — to outperform what raw
hardware alone could do. Meanwhile, DSLRs began giving way
to mirrorless cameras (Sony, Canon, Nikon all shifted their
pro lines). Today's iPhone computational photography can
rival DSLR image quality in many everyday scenarios.
WHAT DOES'T CHANGE
The basic principles of good photography are independent of
what kind of camera technology is used. No matter the era or
device, the fundamentals never change.
Light is everything — its direction, quality, and intensity
determine mood and depth. Composition — the rule of thirds,
leading lines, framing — guides the viewer's eye regardless
of whether you're holding a Rolleiflex or an iPhone. Exposure
(the balance of light, time, and sensitivity) has always been
the photographer's core decision, even when AI now often does
this automatically.
Decisive Moment — knowing when to press the shutter — is
pure human judgment that no algorithm replaces. And
storytelling — why the photo exists — was never a technical
question to begin with.
The best camera, as photographers have always said, is the
one you have with you.
