Yup--I did the Research Scientist/Engineer and Principal Investigator
thing at Iowa State University for about a quarter of a century, now my
time goes to teaching and other educational endeavors, such as teaching
at the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (Iowa State), The RaySociety (Drake), Marshalltown Continuing
Education and...

Astronomy: Journey To
The Cosmic Frontier, 4th ed by John (Jack) D. Fix (University of Iowa, University of Alabama-Huntsville)
When you look out on a clear dark night, away from city lights, you are looking out
into the Universe. This course will help you to make a connection between what you
can see and some basic physical principles which govern the world and universe
that you are a part of. You are an integral part of the universe! You are made of star
stuff! The Hydrogen and Helium atoms where made in the
first few seconds of big bang. Atoms heavier than Hydrogen, necessary for everything on
the earth, including our bodies, were forged in the firey cores of stars and supernova
explosions eons ago.

Educational
Observatory Institute, Inc.
The Educational Observatory (incorporating one or more ATFs), when completed, will
provide K-12 students with an opportunity to do real
science (observational astronomy) from their classrooms via the internet. These
dozens of web pages are broadly categorized into areas of interest. The
categories Observing and Education are further organized by topics.
Students will write a mini-proposal (submitted to his/her teacher)
which needs include:
A statement of the question being asked.
A background paragraph or two of what has already been done in
this scientific area, and how what you are requesting is different
or justified. It is possible that you may want to make an
observation that has been done many times before, but the results
of previous observations are just not available to you.
Technical Approach - What specifically would the ATF be asked to
do and how is this observational data likely to help you answer
your question?

Bicycling

Cyclists fare best when they act and are treated as drivers of vehicles. That is the
guiding principle that cyclists should recognize and government should obey. But
government does its best to prevent cyclists from recognizing this principle. Motorists
fear that competent cyclists would delay them.
Legislation, litigation, education, safety, touring, racing.... Yup, I've done
all that, but mostly just riding. Teaching John Forester's Effective
Cycling and biking cross country have certainly been highlights!

Photography
"I bought a camera in the spring of 1977 in anticipation of
using it to document a bicycle trip from Missoula, Montana to
Pueblo, Colorado (about 1200 miles). Canon had just introduced
the AE-1. Reviews were good, and I bought one with two lenses".
"For me, reading has been an excellent way to learn. Reading
in areas such as, the technical camera and darkroom techniques,
the science of perception, the effect of framing, other
photographers' work--and, of course, one learns by doing. A
photographic experiment is worth a thousand expert opinions".

MusicMen
| The MusicMen got their start in the Fall of 1975 by
members of the Iowa State University Chamber Singers.
Although the group has been as large as sixteen members in the late 70's, it has most
often manifested itself as a quartet, quintet or sextet. Members of the current
quintet,
Kendal Kline,
Randy Griffith,
Paul Anderson*,
Sam Wormley, and
Randy Compton
have been together since 1989.
The Music Men are particularly noted for the various types of music they perform
including glee club, madrigals, barbershop, folk, sacred, holiday, and spirituals.
They appear in conjunction with Musica
Antiqua each January at the ISU Madrigal
Dinners and each June at the Renaissance Faire of the Midlands
at Iowa Western Community College. In addition, the group has performed extensively
for audiences at Iowa State University as well as in Ames and the central Iowa area.
Our first and second CDs have not yet been recorded... Nor has our CD, "Middle Ages
Melodies".
Our current CD project, "Singing that Knocks Down the Elderly", is due out sometime
during the holidays.
*Paul Anderson also plays in the Collegiate Brass and with
Musica Antiqua.

UUFA - Unitarian Universalist Fellowship
of Ames
|
Unitarian Universalists believe in tolerance and independent thinking.
Members are not required to subscribe to any particular creed. Some are Christians, some
are atheists, agnostics, or humanists. The living tradition we share draws from many
sources: direct experience of transcending mysteries, words and deeds of prophetic women
and men, wisdom from the world's religions, humanist teachings, and earth-centered
spirituality.
Inspiration, intellectual stimulation, and fellowship
are the cornerstones of our services. Readings and
sermons draw from a variety of sources, including the
world's religions and the humanities. Services offer
a sense of fellowship through membership
participation, singing, and dialogue.
We are a caring diverse community of individuals who come together to provide an
environment that nurtures and educates our children, stimulates the study and practice
of ethical and liberal religious thought, supports the creative spirit in us all, and
demonstrates concern for the environment and the broader community.
