UUFA Sunday Morning Program Committee
The Sunday Morning Program Committee (SMPC) plans and
implements year-round Sunday morning services during times
when our minister doesn't speak. The committee works with our

"Acceptance" arranged by Erv Luedders
Rev. Sean Parker Dennison, a former member of the UUFA and now minister
of South Valley Unitarian Universalist Society in Salt Lake City, Utah,

Is there a reason so much attention is being paid to "unfortunate
events" and bad news? How might we respond?
Jan 16 "Today's headlines: Speakers: Michael Bugeja

mistaken or marvelous? Accompanist: Mary Richards (9); Ginny Molgaard (11)
[Children - 1st 15 min] Special Music:
Associated Forum: 7:30pm in Tower Room
Today's whirlwind world of information can leave our heads
spinning with all the spin, as fewer and fewer hands have control
of news-gathering operations. Even using all our resources to get
our news -- newspapers, television, radio, internet and the
old-fashioned word of mouth -- are we sure we're getting the
truth? Michael Bugeja, director of the Greenlee School of
Journalism and Communication and media ethicist, will lead the
discussion on the effect corporate control of information has on
us and our world today.
Youth Prelude: Eden Marek
Jan 23 "Greed is good" vs Speakers: Mary Sawyer
"Justice and compassion are better" Facilitators: Mary Richards
Accompanist: Sue Haug (Both)
Special Music: Piano Trio (Burkhalter, Carbrey, Haug)
Mary Sawyer will be our chief guide in this program exploring how our
society's chief economic and political influences, capitalism and
protestantism, gave us our "greed is good" ethic, and the ways in which
we can buck the trend and live by an ethic that embodies justice,
compassion and actively caring for others.
Jan 30 "Justice Walking" Speakers: Beverly Reddick (IEJI), and Rev. Brian Eslinger
Facilitators: Marcia Brink
[Children - 1st 15 min] Accompanist: Mary Richards (9), Sue Haug (11)
Special Music:
Associated Forum: 7:30pm in Tower Room
Poverty in Story County doesn't loiter on street corners; it waits on
tables, provides child care, cleans offices, and stocks shelves at the
discount store. Today's program will open eyes and hearts to the tough
realities of Story County's working poor. It will also introduce a
model for long-term, broad-based community organizing that can empower
us to walk the walk of justice for lasting social change.

Music. It transcends all boundaries and speaks to us in a thousand
different voices, but touches us in the same way. Metaphors from music
help us express aspects of our lives: rhythm, melody, harmony,
intensity, symphony, improvisation, counterpoint. The youth of the
Fellowship will explore the ways musical genres touch us from the
chakras of our bodies to symphonies in our universe.

Special Music: Reggie Greenlaw
Man, always the myth-maker, creates stories to help us understand
ourselves and our relationship with others and with the unseen beings
that must have power over us. One archetype that appears again and
again in ancient cultures is a story of a great flood, a tale of the
cycle of birth, corruption that incurs the gods' wrath, death, and
rebirth. We will discover what we can learn from the Babylonian epic, a
Greek myth, a Bob Dylan protest song, and an intergenerational modern
musical-comedy version of Noah's Ark. Children begin in Fellowship
Hall.

Throughout human history we have explored and altered our
understanding of what it means to be human. In today's world that
question is extremely important as humanity has the power not only
to destroy our planet but to alter the environment to an
unprecedented degree. How do our religious values help us define
what it means to be human?

"Firedance" and "Rage over a lost penny"

We have sown the seeds of caring and concern for our partner
church in Transylvania over the years, and we continue to reap
a harvest of friendship. As we inch our way towards our
Thanksgiving, we pause this day to consider and be grateful for
the abundance of an Iowan harvest (as demonstrated with our Apple
Communion) and compare it to the customs of our partner church
in the birthplace of Unitarianism.

Facilitators: Chris White
Accompanist: Anne Kimber (both)
Special Music: Danny Alexander - Youth Prelude
"Stairway to Heaven" (Jimmy Page and Robert Plant)
One of the primary questions addressed by many religions has
to do with salvation. What does it mean? What does it take
for humanity to achieve it? Universalism, half of our
Unitarian Universalist tradition, is named for this idea. How
we shape the answers to these questions in our lives has
implications for our faith.

This title could be read two ways, both equally appropriate.
The first is as a statement: we put our faith into practice.
The second is as a question: do we have faith in our
practice? In other words, does our religious practice really
have the potential to make a difference, in our lives and in
the world around us?
