UUFA Sunday Morning Program Committee
The Sunday Morning Program Committee (SMPC) plans and
implements year-round Sunday morning services during times
when our minister doesn't speak. The committee works with our
minister to facilitate and to plan shared programs. Members
arrange for speakers from within and from outside the

Jan 7 "One?" Speakers: Rev. Brian Eslinger
Facilitators: Sam Wormley
Special Music: Sue & Dan Haug
Do we live in a unified universe? Do we understand ourselves
as unique expressions of a diverse universe? What's the difference?
Does it matter? When Fritz Franzen bought this sermon at last year's
auction, asking what it be based on E.O. Wilson's book, "Consillience",
I think he hopes for some answers to these questions. We'll see.

There are many people in our religious heritage who have laudable
achievements attached to their name. Some were scientists, others reformers
and some just darn nice people. We'll spend a fun morning reviewing our
knowledge of our UU past during this all-congregational program.

During February we'll tackle several key issues in health care.
Our aim is to learn about and discuss these issues and to identify
actions and areas of interest that we might pursue in the weeks
and months ahead.
Feb 4 [Health Care - UU Speakers: Rev. Brian Eslinger
Historical perspective Facilitators: Stu Huntington
and principles] Special Music:
We all deal with health care at some point in our lives, as spectators
and participants. We'll examine how people's religious values
influence people's attitudes toward health care both on a personal
and public policy level.
Feb 11 "Health Care Forum" Speakers: Duffy, Reggie, Sam
Facilitators: Duffie Lorr
Special Music: Piano Trio
One of the best ways to learn about the strengths and weaknesses of our
health care system is to share our own stories. Duffie Lorr, Reggie Greenlaw
and another members of the fellowship will talk about their experiences.
Following this, we'll have an open discussion period during which others can
share their perspectives and we can identify issues and actions we might want
to pursue further.
Feb 18 [Death and Dying] Speakers: Rev. Brian Eslinger
Facilitators: Jim Roberts
Special Music: Fellowship Voices
End of life issues are multi-faceted and rich with meaning. These
issues are also often frightening and tabooed in our culture. In an effort
to breakdown the taboo we'll examine a few of the facets of death and dying.
Feb 25 "Ethical Issues in Health Speakers: (Guest Speaker)
Care" Facilitators: Jim Roberts
Special Music: Burkhalter, Crosbie & Haug
We'll close the health care series with a discussion of key ethical issues
facing the health care field and those that it serves. An expert in medical
ethics will join us to highlight these issues and spark lively discussion.
We'll also summarize the issues and topics of interest that have been raised
during the series and pinpoint actions that we might want to pursue in the
weeks and months ahead.

As a biologist and a pagan, I've found the Divine, not in a cathedral

jellyfish floating on the waves, in a field of grass rippling in
the wind, and in a tiny ant hauling a giant leaf back to her anthill".

given their lives for our nation. We'll have a special candle lighting to
honor any of our family and friends who have died.

At one time, we were the center (and the purpose) of the world.
Beginning with the Renaissance four centuries ago, we have been
displaced and relegated to insignificant in the history of the
Universe. During the last few years we are beginning to understand
that the Universe is in a run-away expansion. We have learned that
life can exist in places and forms that seem impossible. Sam
Wormley and Roger Berger will bring us up to date and show us how
intimately we are connected with the whole Universe.

Sara Siebert is the Volunteer Programs Director at Rape Victum Advocacy
Program (RVAP). The RVAP began as an outgrowth of the group Women Against
Rape, formed in Iowa City around 1971. By 1973, seven women saw the need
for a place where women could call and talk about their experiences, so
they obtained a phone line and took turns sleeping overnight in donated
office space at a local lawyer's office, and the Rape Crisis Line was
born. Over the last two-and-a-half decades, RVAP has grown into an agency
with a yearly budget of about $400,000 that serves all of Johnson,
Washington, Cedar, and Iowa counties. Volunteers have been the mainstay of
the RVAP since its inception. Over the years, thousands of women have
responded to calls on the crisis line, and hundreds of women and men have
contributed to the success of the agency as peer educators, board members
and in other volunteer capacities.

There is no right way to walk a labyrinth. You only have to enter and
follow the path. However, your walk can encompass a variety of
attitudes. It may be joyous or somber. It might be thoughtful or
prayerful. You may use it as a walking meditation. Adults are often
serious in the labyrinth. Children most often run in and out as fast as
they can in a playful manner. This service will include some brief
history and explanation of the labyrinth and will spend time discussing
ways to bring this ancient spiritual practice to one's life.

For some the Winter Solstice centers on honoring the darkness as a respite
- a time to reflect and consider blessings, passages, renewal as well as
celebrating the return of the Sun. We often get depressed less from the
cold of winter than from the loss of light and knowing we're at the point
of turning that corner is a real boost. Kelly, Toby, and Sam will share
with you their reflections, contrasting the darkness with the optimism,
poetry, appreciation and celebration!
