#01 Classical Music in the 19th Century: The Romantic Period
Instructor: Jean Meek
Mondays 11:00 AM – 12:30 PM
Eight weeks, March 22 – May 10
Reiman Ballroom, ISU Alumni Center
Class limit 55

In the first week of this class we will consider some of the features of Romantic music that make it different from the music of the previous Classical period. We will then take one or two of these features and look at them in greater depth in week 2 with plenty of musical examples. We will also consider the parallels between music and other art forms in this period. Later weeks will include the following topics of particular relevance to the 19th Century: the piano virtuoso, the tone poem and other orchestral music that tells a story, nationalism in music, and the art song. We will also spend at least one week on the opera of this period. No previous knowledge of music is required for this class.

Jean Meek grew up in a musical family and became interested in classical music at an early age. She has taught many previous music classes for the College for Seniors and made presentations for a number of local musical organizations. Jean studied voice for several years.

#02 Tradecraft: The Tools and Techniques of Espionage
Instructor: Larry Brown
Mondays 1:00 – 2:30 PM
Eight weeks, March 22 – May 10
Reiman Ballroom, ISU Alumni Center
Class limit 55

“Tradecraft” refers to the nuts and bolts of espionage. What makes spies tick, and how do they go about their business? This course will examine what motivates a spy, and how he or she operates. We’ll look at historical examples of famous (or infamous!) and not so famous spies—those who spied both for and against the United States—with particular emphasis on the tradecraft they used.

Topics will include:

  • Motivation: spotting, assessing, developing, and recruiting agents (spies)
  • Training
  • Clandestine communications: couriers, dead drops, secret writing, and codes
  • Surveillance: physical (foot and vehicular) and electronic

Larry Brown is a former CIA operations officer who was in Washington, D.C., and North Africa. He retired as a colonel from military intelligence and the U.S. Army Reserve. Larry is a former French instructor at UNI and Iowa State University.

#03 The First Presidency
Instructor: Clair Keller
Mondays 3:00 – 4:30 PM
Six weeks, March 22 – April 26
Reiman Ballroom, ISU Alumni Center
Class limit 55

This course will cover the important events and issues that the first president of the United States, George Washington, faced during his eight years in office. The events and issues will include personal as well as national topics.

Topics will include:

  • The origins and events leading to the election and inaugural of George Washington, our first president.
  • Creating the first government, the problems the nation faced in 1789, and the solutions they chose to solve these problems.
  • Amending the Constitution to include a Bill of Rights
  • George Washington’s tour of New England
  • The successes and failures of the foreign policy problems faced during George Washington’s presidency.
  • George Washington’s tour of southern states.
  • Native American and Frontier rebellions the nation faced during George Washington’s presidency.
  • Why George Washington should be considered our country’s best president.

Professor Clair Keller held a joint appointment in the Departments of History and Secondary Education at ISU for 32 years where he taught early American history and social science methods. He also supervised student teachers. In 1987 he began holding historic press conferences portraying George Washington in schools and to community groups.

#04 Great Decisision—Des Moines
Instructor: Doug Finnemore
Mondays 2:30 – 4:00 PM
Eight weeks, March 22 – May 10
The Theatre, Wesley Acres, Des Moines
Class limit: 45

Great Decisions is a foreign policy discussion group that studies one topic each week for eight weeks. The Foreign Policy Association prepares about 10 pages of reading material and a 25-minute video for each topic as a factual base for the discussion. A study guide is available for $20. (Purchase is encouraged, but not required; please pay when you register. Study guides will be distributed at the first class.)

Topics for 2010

Special envoys
Special envoys can help bring attention and diplomatic muscle to resolve conflicts and global challenges, but they also bring with them their own “special” problems. Will the Obama administration’s reliance on special envoys increase the ability of the U.S. to deal with major international issues or complicate our diplomatic options?

Kenya & R2P
Post-election rioting in Kenya in December 2007 brought pressure on Nairobi, from international and regional diplomats, to end tensions and avert bloodshed on a massive scale. What lessons can be learned from the intervention in Kenya? What does it mean for the UN’s emerging responsibility to protect doctrine?

Global crime

From the booming sex trade in Eastern Europe, to online fraud syndicates in Africa and the drug cartels of Asia and Central America, crime is becoming increasingly organized and globalized. How can countries better protect citizens seeking the benefits of a globalized world from being exploited? What international actors can effectively fight global organized crime?

U.S.-China security relations

China’s influence is growing, along with its military expenditures. How will this growth affect China’s relations with its neighbors and with the U.S.? Will China’s expanding military and economic power affect traditional U.S. roles and U.S. alliances in East Asia? How will countries like Japan, South Korea, and India respond?

Global financial crisis
The global financial crisis that began in late 2007 revealed major deficiencies in the regulation of markets and institutions all of which came perilously close to collapse. Emergency measures to prevent a full collapse of the global financial system have led to mixed results. How will governments and the world community respond to this challenge?

Russia and its neighbors
Russia’s policy of maintaining a sphere of influence in former Soviet satellites has been challenged in recent years by movements against pro-Russia regimes. Russia has pushed back by cutting Ukraine’s natural gas supply and intervening in Georgia’s campaign in South Ossetia. Will Russia regain its traditional leadership role in the region?

The Persian Gulf
Now more than ever, the Persian Gulf region offers many difficult challenges to U.S. policymakers. How will Obama’s direct appeal to Arabs and Muslims impact U.S. foreign policy in the region? What will be the fallout of withdrawal of U.S. forces from Iraq? Can the U.S. and its allies prevent Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons?

Peacebuilding and conflict resolution
U.S. campaigns in Iraq and Afghanistan have shown that military force alone cannot ensure peace in all conflicts. How can the U.S. successfully integrate the tools of peace building into its statecraft? At what point do poverty, disease, and climate change threaten national security? What role can non-governmental actors play in supporting government led efforts?

Douglas Finnemore, distinguished professor emeritus, Department of Physics and Astronomy, spent 40 years with the Ames Laboratory and the U.S. Department of Energy and has facilitated several Great Decisions courses
.

Department of Energy and has facilitated several Great Decisions courses.

#16 …So Grows the Tree: Creating and Sharing an Ethical Will
Instructor: Jo Kline Cebuhar
Wednesdays 8:30 – 10:30 AM
Three weeks, April 7 – April 21
Horton Multipurpose Conference Room, ISU Alumni Center
Class limit 30

What do Erma Bombeck, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Tim Russert, and Jacob, son of Isaac, have in common? Each one left the gift of an Ethical Will: a message of beliefs and values, life lessons, and hopes for the future to be shared with loved ones.

Your most valuable legacy is not measured in dollars and cents; it is a lifetime’s wealth of experience and reflection. Sharing stories and wisdom in an Ethical Will benefits your circle of loved ones as well as society at large--its core values are no greater than the collective ideals of its members. “As the twig is bent, so grows the tree.”

If you have ever thought about sharing the lessons of your life but didn’t know where to begin, learn how to identify your core beliefs and discover the many options for expressing your personal message. In this three-week class, you will learn that being a watcher is more important than being a writer when it comes to leaving the bequest
of values known as an Ethical Will.

Wednesday, April 7:
In a multi-media presentation of sights and sounds, the what, why, who, when, where, and how of Ethical Wills will be covered. This tradition was first practiced over 3,500 years ago from the bed of Jacob as he lay dying. Whether inspired by a milestone birthday, the arrival of a grandchild, or retirement, Ethical Wills continue to evolve today in a variety of low- and high-tech formats.

Wednesday, April 14:
The class will examine the assortment of Ethical Will media: a personal journal, an embellished scrapbook, a family cookbook, an audiotape, an elaborate PowerPoint presentation, a home video, and a simple, handwritten letter. Have you considered writing to your family, recounting special memories and what they mean to you? Or have you been looking for the perfect quotation that reflects your view on life? The first step, getting your thoughts from the heart and mind onto the page, often seems the most difficult. Brief writing exercises will kick start your creativity and help you identify key concepts and messages. Experience how words, music, events, people, places, and even fragrance can be used to inspire and focus expression.

Wednesday, April 21:
Once you become familiar with Ethical Wills, you’ll start to recognize them everywhere! Class members will be invited to share examples of Ethical Wills from their favorite authors, famous personalities, and family archives. Although there’s no grade in this class, there will be a homework assignment at the end of Week 2 and we’ll all learn from those who volunteer to share their writing.

The primary goals in this course are to learn about Ethical Wills and to become inspired to create your own version of this ancient tradition. In the last session, before we go our separate ways, we’ll brainstorm methods to keep each of your artistic fires burning and to stay on track to create an Ethical Will, sooner rather than later.

Jo Kline Cebuhar is a graduate of Iowa State University and Drake Law School. An attorney and business owner for over 25 years, Jo is the author of the upcoming book, “So Grows the Tree: Creating and Sharing an Ethical Will,” and the award-winning book, “Last Things First, Just in Case… The Practical Guide to Living Wills and Durable Powers of Attorney,” published in 2006. She chaired the board of Iowa’s first and largest hospice organization and is a frequent speaker on the importance of preparing health care advance directives and creating an Ethical Will to share one’s beliefs, life lessons, and hopes for the future.

#17 Great Questions
Instructor: Frank Rizzo
Wednesdays 11:00 AM – 12:30 PM
Eight weeks, March 24 – May 12
Horton Multipurpose Conference Room, ISU Alumni Center
Class limit 20

This course is similar to the eight-week Great Questions course offered last spring. In that course, we asked: What do we, or can we, know about the world…and ourselves? We agreed that water and carpets, puppies and people, have real existence; but what about mathematics, colors, virtues, and morals? Are they all subjective? How are beliefs related to truths, and evidence related to knowledge? We compared our ideas with ancient thinkers, such as Socrates and Aristotle, and with later ones representing various disciplines.

In this spring’s Great Questions course we’ll again consider questions surrounding concepts of reality, knowledge, and truth, in general. But here we’ll consider findings in contemporary brain-science, the nature-nurture question, causality and values with a bit more emphasis on consciousness, more on free-will and less emphasis on physical sciences. This time, our concepts of God, theology, spirituality, and religion naturally arise, when we examine the sensibility of holding an agnostic or atheist or theist worldview – and especially when we ask: Is the universe just a grand accident, or perhaps better thought of as a gift?

As with last spring’s course, we are privileged to have several lectures, on DVD, by Professor Daniel Robinson, from Oxford and Georgetown Universities, who is internationally recognized for his expertise in philosophy and psychology, and for his outstanding, enjoyable and information-packed lectures. In addition, we have several DVD-lectures on the topics mentioned above by other expert scholars - all made available to us through the Teaching Company <www.teach12.com>. As before, a typical class will consist of a 30-minute DVD presentation, followed by coffee and an hour-long discussion.

Frank Rizzo is professor emeritus at ISU; he held faculty positions at the Universities of Illinois, Washington, and Kentucky. He has won 10 awards for outstanding teaching and two international medals for his research in applied mathematics: the Worcester Reed Warner Medal from the American Society of Mechanical Engineers in 1993; and (the first recipient of the now biennial) Frank J. Rizzo Medal, established in his name by the International Association for Boundary Elements, in 2004
.
